Getting Ready for Spring

Trends we can let go of…

21 March 2025

Every year when it starts to feel like spring I feel an itch…to open up the house, air things out, and enhance my surroundings by embracing something fresh and new. The beauty of a classic, intentionally-designed, well-constructed interior is that it provides such a wonderful backdrop for the personal touches that let you bring the outdoors in, allow your inner creative to flourish, and make a house a home.

Even with the best of intentions, you can end up incorporating design elements in your home that simply don’t stand up to the passing of time. You grow tired of them, they outlive their usefulness, or maybe they just were never a very good idea in the first place. It happens! But at some point you recognize they just simply have to go.

Here are a few trends we can definitely let go of this year…

Trendy black fixtures on stark white everything

This may have seemed like a great idea at the time, but a design approach that looks great in a magazine ad can feel pretty soulless in real life. And now your bathroom now looks like every other bathroom on Pinterest! Spice it up, bring in a pop of color, incorporate some softness, make it feel like you really, truly live there.

Fake plants and faux living walls

I get it, I really do. Real plants are hard, but that plastic monster in the corner isn’t fooling anyone. Real plants draw the outdoors in, and breathe life into an interior in a way that plastic simply cannot. If you really lack a green thumb, consider going for something low-maintenance—like a big succulent!

Fast furniture

Honestly, “fast furniture” is more like a fast track to the landfill. You deserve better, and our world deserves better. If it means buying less, then buy less, but invest in pieces that last. You won’t regret it.

Ultra-minimalist spaces

Minimalism is compelling. It’s clean, and it’s chic. But when your living room looks like an Apple store, I guarantee you’re going to have a hard time slowing down and settling in. Minimalism as a core concept is great, but let’s warm it up with a few rich textures, layered lighting, and pieces that actually make you want to sit down and stay a while.

All-white interiors that feel like a cloud…but not in a good way

White-on-white-on-white, quite honestly, tends to feel unfinished – more like unfinished drywall than living in a cloud. Adding a bit of contrast — wood tones, textured fabrics, a bold statement piece – brings life and character to all that white, and makes the white elements more impactful.

Overly themed rooms

You know the rooms I’m talking about — coastal grandma or boho overload. Even when the individual pieces are great, with too much uniformity and too little imagination they lack personality and longevity. Instead, it’s far better to mix styles that are meaningful for you to create a curated, lived-in look that feels authentic – and more fun!

Aesthetics at the cost of function

Don’t get me wrong, I love a beautiful space. But if your sofa is just for looking at and not sitting on, there’s a problem. Always, always balance beauty with function—invest in pieces that actually work for your lifestyle.

Now, let’s talk about a few design elements that may have started out as a great idea, but are overused or just lack soul…

Some of my favorite classic design elements that never go out of style…

White Bedding: Crisp white sheets and duvet covers evoke a hotel-like calm and always look clean and timeless, no matter the bedroom style.

Vintage or Persian Rugs: Handwoven or vintage rugs add patina and soul to a room and their intricate patterns and craftsmanship never go out of fashion.

Classic Statement Lighting: A beautifully-designed fixture—whether modern or traditional—can define a space, and iconic pieces like a lantern pendant, globe light, or crystal chandelier always hold their own.

Wood Dining Table: A solid wood dining table brings warmth and character to a space. It’s classic, versatile, and perfect for mixing with different chair styles.

A Neutral Sofa: A well-tailored sofa in a neutral fabric, (think linen, cotton, or a soft performance velvet), will always feel fresh and adaptable to changing trends.
