Wednesday–Inspire:  I have always found it very important to give back to my community and one of my favorite organizations to work with is Shelter’s Inc.  I love their mission of providing shelter for families in crisis while teaching them tools to change their lives.   We are so excited to be focusing on their Pittsburgh location.  In this phase, we are making over their conference room that we hope will inspire and educate everyone who is learning to build their resume, interviewing skills and working on job placement.
In addition, we are also going to make over the children’s playroom with tables for art projects, a tutoring area, an art wall, and the world map that we hope will encourage the children and parents to think big and pursue their dreams.

I do a lot of research when planning a design for our clients and am always looking for new sources of inspiration.  I read tons of design magazines and came across an image in one recently and instantly fell in love with the vibe of this kitchen.  It’s moody, modern and edgy and the brass accents add the perfect touch of glam.  Very cool!

This sent me on a hunt for more images with dark tile…

The dark penny tile in this shower with the brass fixture is simple, but still striking…

Another great way to incorporate the moody blacks is to use soapstone as a countertop.

If you’d like to add a touch of black to your home, here are a couple of great sources…

Wednesday–Inspire:  Next visit to the city, be sure to stop in at Anthem Home on Sacramento Street!  Their stores are so well curated with items that are unique and that you would never find at large retail stores.  I love going in there to look for accessories for our clients’ homes and inevitably find a little something for my own home as well!  They have furniture, lighting, bed and bath items and even have some unique jewelry pieces.  And great news…they are opening a store in Menlo Park this spring, as well as having an on line shopping experience to come!  Definitely one of my favorite shops!

Wednesday–Inspire:  Did you know that you should always use a mat that has 8-ply thickness when framing your artwork?  It makes your art pop and makes it look all the more important!  See these images from some art in my own home and a gallery wall we did for our clients…

All good frame shops will know what you mean when specifying the thickness of the mat.  It’s a really easy way to make your art and photos feel special.

Wednesday–Inspire:  I always have admired Los Angeles designer Ross Cassidy, especially after watching him on Million Dollar Decorating.  He is definitely a minimalist and I am in love his new collaboration with CB2.  Here are a few of my favorite pieces of his…

Wednesday–Inspire:  I have a board on Pinterest titled Architecture and Outdoor Spaces where I pin images that have unique outdoor designs, or they might have a particular plant that I love, or just a really cool building that caught my eye!  Thought I’d share a little eye candy with you!

Wednesday–Inspire:  We recently shared some option boards we put together for a family whose kids’ rooms and master we had been working on.  And now we are creating a great room for this native New York family to watch tv and read while spreading out in their new California home.  We wanted to deliver a clean and modern room with fresh pops of color – teal, orange and grey combined. The chairs swivel and we designed a built-in bar that is hidden behind retractable doors.

It’s always fun to see which options the clients will choose, so as soon as we have it all pulled together, we’ll share the finished project!  It’s been so much fun to work on!

Wednesday–Inspire:  I love front doors as I believe that a good one sets the tone for a house.  When I drive around neighborhoods and spot a front door that I love, it makes me wonder about the family that lives there and what the inside might look like!  Pay attention to your front door and what it says about your home!

I gathered a bunch of doors that I love and created a board for them on Pinterest.  Be sure to take a peek if you’re considering changing or updating your own.

Wednesday–Inspire:  We recently presented an office space design for YDesign based in Walnut Creek.   They have two suites in the building they are located in, one of which we designed four years ago.  We wanted to incorporate their branding while creating a fun and energizing environment for their employees.  The focus was on their kitchen/lounge area near the entrance, a lounge area as well as a fabric sample wall.  We also provided some tweaks to their conference room designs (which their staff had already provided to us) and a feature wall above the cubicles.  We created a much larger kitchen which we color blocked and utilized all the furniture and lighting of the YDesign brand.  Option B has a “partition wall” made of framed colored transparent acrylic panels to divide the space a bit.   We are excited about the design and we can’t wait to see it all come together.

Wednesday–Inspire:  I’m sharing some of our option boards and textiles that we recently presented to our client that has an amazing great room which is stunning in scale and in location. This room has the bones that makes you feel like you are staying at a fabulous boutique hotel and we cannot wait for their installation!  We want to create a casual yet elegant room that evokes the California outdoor lifestyle and is very inviting for their family and friends.   They love to entertain and enjoy the outdoors and our plan is to create a special place for them to do just that!
